What do you say when your neighbor across the street asks, "How are you?"
It really shouldn't be a tough question. Today, for me, it was.
Do I say fine?
Or...
Do I say that I'm crappy?
That I found out yesterday that I have pneumonia and that I won't be able to work for the rest of the week? That I'll be missing my last two days of work. Finals exam days that are 1/2 days for the kids? That I'm missing a ton of teacher work time that was going to help me finish up grades and progress notes?
Do I tell him that I spent yesterday crying? That I was told by my doctor to nix weekend plans? Which meant no Christmas with my parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews this year? That this is the first time in my life I'll be missing Christmas with my side of the family and that it's got me feeling like holding my own pity party for one?
Well...I didn't. Say ALL of that. I did tell him I'm under the weather and he wished me well.
And I will be.

If it's a neighbor you don't know well, I say stick with that answer!
I feel so bad for you. I really wish I could help. Can I? Name it, babe, and I am there!!! Want some chicken noodles?!?!?
I remember the first year I couldn't spend my birthday with my family. Not near as big a deal, but still hurt my heart! I hope you get better soon!!!
BIG HUGS!!!!
I am so sorry you have pneumonia! of all times; I'm sure it's very frustrating to not be able to spend Christmas with your family; but I hope you can take this weekend to rest and take it easy so you can recover sooner!
Jeez. It sucks to be sick right now! I say, push the antibiotics and go anyway. Your family will help you out and it will make you feel worlds better to be with them.
Just an idea.
I hope you feel better soon, hang in there.
Both my kids have relapsed with The Bug That Never Goes Away. Sigh. It's hard this time of year.
You could answer like my uncle, who ALWAYS answers "Well, I can't but complain."
I hope that you get feeling better. We're all on the edge of sick, too.
I hope soon you are able to reply with "fine". I never know whether they are actually interested or if "how are you?" has finally taken over as a replacement for "hello".
I agree with thirtysomething...take the antibiotics and go see your family!!! Mom's love to take care of you when you are sick. Might actually do you some good to be around lots of people who will pamper you!!! Hope you are feeling better really soon.
Take care.
Julie
Ohhhh. I'm sorry you're not well. And I know how getting sick at the end of the term can really mess up the marking and such. So sorry.
I'm so late catching up! I'm so sorry you're sick AND that you're missing out on all the Christmas togetherness--what a rotten thing to happen. Feel better soon...
