Talk Talk

We are so excited as the boy's language continues to develop. This week's milestone: ending consonant sounds! He says UP! And CUP! With the /p/ sound at the end. No more uh- and cu-. Very exciting.

He's also discovering the power of language. He pats the floor beside his racetrack and says, "play." I do it. He pats the couch and says, "cow". I sit. He pulls my hand to the fridge and says, "joo". I get him a drink. "wa-wer". I get him another drink. "hoot-sna". I open a package of fruit snacks. This new found skill has him giddy with power.

Then there's my daughter. Who NEVER stops talking. I shouldn't say never, because at this very minute she's watching Mickey Mouse and not talking. But in her presence, with no distractions, the girl shares out loud every thought that enters her head.

The frustrating part for me is that I get frustrated. And sometimes shoosh her. I shouldn't shoosh her. But sometimes a mama just needs a moment's peace. Her little face droops when I tell her this. When I tell her that her mom needs a minute of quiet and to go play. It's a new phenomenon. Me, being annoyed with her. I feel so guilty.

I figure it's a normal growing pain. She's also found the power of words. I've listened to every word she's said for four and a half years. I'm sure we'll figure it out.

ah, well if it helps, you've made it a year longer without getting annoyed in the first place than i have!

i always remind myself it's the sum rather than some of the parts we offer and it all rounds out in the end. growing pains, indeed.

I ask both the girls to be quiet for a minute about a million times a day. Sometimes you just need to think! Don't feel guilty.

My mom used to shush me all the time: I'm still a major talker, and I, in any case, had to learn to be quiet SOMETIME, right?

And hooray for Mason! It's fun when they figure that out, huh? (Not so fun when they have tantrums because you don't know what they're saying)

I know exactly what you mean--T. sings and talks constantly and I hate shushing her, too, but sometimes just can't help it!

My secondborn is a BIG TALKER. I used to say to him, "Oh! Wait a second! Mommy's ears are full! Give me a few minutes until they empty out."

I think when she wants to talk and you don't want to listen, you should give her the phone and call me and send her to her room to talk where you can't hear her, but I can!!!! Just a thought..... I love to talk to her. Although mainly because I don't have to listen all day every day!!

Kinda sad at the loss of the Masonese though. Oh well.... he is still cute as a bug's ear!!!

Oh, Girl! I SO know how you feel with the little girl that NEVER stops talking...like, sometimes I think I will LOSE my mind. My 5 y.o changes subjects so fast I get whiplash sometimes and when i catch up, she has moved on. The chatter. Non-stop. I, too, sometimes shoosh her, so I won't go crazy. I mean, it is cute and all, but GEEZ. ;)
And that is great about your little guy...learning the words !

I LOVE when they get language. Love it. I did not realize, however, just how quickly that love backfires. Miss M is a NON-STOP chatterbox. You're right. It is wearying.

A twin? family is silly. I'm glad you post about where mason is, I can read what you write and see Alaina go through the same phase in 3 months. She's learning Mimi and Papa's names right now and we all appreciate that!

Oh - I have *such* guilt about shushing my free-spirited, loud-mouth four year old Girl! But, gosh, can she TALK. And chatter. And gab. She even talks in her sleep. Ack!

"hoot-sna" is adorable. =)

I think all parents are guilty of the "shooshing" thing! It's hard to balance the constant demands of motherhood with some "me-hood"! Yay to the little man on his language explosion!
