Maury

As I bite through the turnip that I bought this morning at the farmer's market, I think of my Grandpa Maurice. The flavor floods my mind and heart with memories of my childhood.

He and my grandmother lived in a two-story white house on the highway. They had a huge garden that produced most of the vegetables we ate all summer. My grandfather always got me to try new things, despite my objections. Turnips, radishes, parsnips. He would make parsnip patties and fry them in his electric skillet on the countertop. I remember thinking they were the best thing I'd ever eaten.

My grandfather has been gone for 12 years now, but he is still so vivid in my memory. Today I didn't miss him quite as much, as I remembered how much I like turnips.

I think I'll sign off now and look up a recipe for parsnip patties.

Grandpa, I love you still. Always.

Isn't it amazing how a smell, or taste can take you right back. I am sure your Grandpa is thinking of you right now too.

Do you remember when he cut the alphabet out of huge carrots for you to take to kindergarten? (I'm smiling now.)

What a nice tribute.

I don't eat parsnip. On account of my father calling them 'albino carrots.' Kinda ruined 'em for me.

And canning beans....for what seemed like forever! They just kept coming!

My smells are tobacco smoke and caress soap. Remember the pink bar of soap that they always had? I never knew what it was until I got a package for myself in college. (I had to throw it away cuz it was too creepy to get out of the shower and smell like my grandparents.)

Ooooo, and eating the corn cut off the cob, that was supposed to get frozen. But I just ate it and ate it until I thought I would burst! :-)
